Vice President JD Vance announced Sunday that his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance, gave birth to a son, Alec Neel Vance.
“Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother,” Vance said. They thanked doctors and staff at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the White House medical team.
Alec Neel Vance joins older siblings Ewan, 9; Vivek, 6; and Mirabel, 4.
It was the first time a baby had been born to a sitting vice president in more than 150 years.
Usha Vance was born and raised in the working-class suburbs of San Diego, California, to a mechanical engineer father and a molecular biologist mother who moved to the United States from Andhra Pradesh, India.
Vance has advocated for higher birth rates, and he wrote in his book that his wife was initially reluctant but changed her mind after the killing of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk. “I remember when we decided to run for vice president, I said, ‘Honey, I really want to have a fourth kid.’ And she said, ‘Well, you can become vice president or you can have a fourth baby,’” Vance said.
The birth came amid a recent mini baby boom among top members of the administration: Katie Miller, the wife of White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, recently gave birth to the couple’s fourth child, and White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt had her second child in May.
The couple announced the pregnancy in January and said at the time she was due in late July; they have been considering leasing a house in Middleburg, Virginia, and the Secret Service is planning to provide additional security for the rural property.
