The Justice Department has launched a campaign finance probe into Sen. Ruben Gallego.

Oriana González, a politics reporter, and Julia Manchester, a White House correspondent, joined the program "The Takeout" to discuss the report.

A person familiar with the matter confirmed that Gallego is the subject of a federal investigation into suspected campaign finance violations.

Reports allege Gallego used campaign funds to fly his family to the Caribbean, Miami, Nantucket and Puerto Rico and to pay for childcare.

The Federal Election Commission says campaign funds may be used to pay for a candidate’s childcare expenses that are incurred as a direct result of campaign activities.

On Monday, the Senate Ethics Committee closed its inquiry into allegations of sexual misconduct and campaign finance violations after finding no evidence that Gallego violated Senate rules or applicable law, according to a letter released by his office.

On Tuesday, Gallego posted a video message on X, saying he's being targeted by the Department of Justice because he holds "this administration accountable," he said.

Gallego's office was contacted for comment, and the Department of Justice has not yet commented on the probe.
