U.S. airlines paid nearly $6.5 billion in fuel costs in April, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics said Friday.

That total was up more than 26% from March and up 78% in the past year, the bureau said.

The increases come as the war with Iran passes the 100-day mark and the cost for America's airline industry is mounting.
